A few days ago we have informed you that hackers are just few days away from releasing A5 untethered jailbreak. This jailbreak includes iPhone 4S and iPad 2. There’s still no exact release time but at least we know that it’s coming to the public very very soon.

Pod2g has just posted a video to his blog of an untethered jailbreak running on Apple’s latest handset, the iPhone 4S.

The video was made by his friend Dustin Howett, a popular iOS developer and hacker. In the video below, a real untethered jailbreak is shown on the iPhone 4S.

As a side note, planetbeing today announced that he could get unsigned code on his iPhone 4S.

Without this new tweak, you can’t get an animated wallpaper on your homescreen. Only static images set as a wallpaper. With vWallpaper 2, you can add videos, cool 3D effects, HTML widgets and more.

In order to get the tweak (use this guide posted here to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 untethered), you have to add its Cydia repository by navigating to the Manage, Sources, Edit, Add and write down this repo:

iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak Supported Devices

• iPhone 4 (GSM – CDMA)
• iPhone 3GS
• iPod touch 4G
• iPod touch 3G
• iPad 1

Notes:

• If you have one of those devices and are not on 5.0.1 yet, update now!  The SHSH window is still open for 5.0.1  If you unlock via ultrasn0w or gevey, make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW!    Once you’re at 5.0.1, use the latest redsn0w 0.9.10 to both jailbreak and untether.
• If you’re already at 5.0.1 with a tethered jailbreak, you have two choices: either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak (deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that), or install the Cydia package prepared by the chronic devteam.  The patches are the same regardless of which you choose.
• Some of you are using a hybrid 5.0/5.0.1 configuration.  If so, do not attempt to install this untether over that setup!  You will most likely get into a reboot cycle.  Do a sync and fresh restore to 5.0.1 then install the jailbreak + untether.

Downloads

1. Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 (Windows – Mac OS X).
2. Download iOS 5.0.1 stock firmware from here.
3. Download iTunes from here.

Steps

STEP 1: Backup your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and restore it using the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW file downloaded above.

STEP 2: Open Redsn0w you already downloaded, select “Extras” then “Select IPSW” and browse for the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW file.

STEP 3: Now click on “Jailbreak” then “Install Cydia”.

STEP 4: You’ll need to follow the on-screen instructions to get your device into DFU mode (for newbies, follow our guide posted here).

STEP 5: Once done, your device will be rebooted and you’ll get a full untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.

For those who already have tethered jailbreak on their devices, you can run a jailbreak tweak from Cydia.

The iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak works on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G, iPod touch 3G and the iPad 1. However, iPhone hacker pod2g is currently focusing on releasing a jailbreak that will work on A5 devices like the iPhone 4S and iPad 2:

@pod2g is now looking for a way to extend this to A5 devices.  Because those devices cannot use geohot’s limera1n exploit to inject the untether, they require exploits above and beyond those used for this release.  Keep following pod2g on twitter or his blog for any progress reports!

The issue happens because of the software not the hardware. Many of our users have confirmed that once they have done the below steps, they felt with a great difference in the response of their iPhone’s home button.

It works by re-calibrating your iPhone’s home button so it works as you have just got your iPhone. Follow the below steps:

STEP 1: Open a stock app, like Weather or Stocks.

 

STEP 2: Press and hold your power button until “slide to power off” appears and release.

 

STEP 3: Press and hold your Home button until the “slide to power off” goes away, and the app force quits. Your iPhone’s Home button should now be more responsive, because it has been recalibrated.

The reason why many of you might want to downgrade their iPad 2 from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 4.3.3 is that because there’s no any jailbreak available for iPad 2 except Comex’s JailbreakMe 3.0 which only works on iOS 4.3.3. So if you’re one of those who accidently updated to iOS 5.x, having iOS 4.3.3 SHSH blobs and want to downgrade back, TinyCFW makes this process easier by creating a custom firmware that will be able to be recognized by TinyUmbrella so that the device can be downgraded.

iPhone 4 reasons might want to downgrade back to iOS 4.3.3 so that they get untethered jailbreak which is only available on that version. However, pod2g is currently in the final steps to release an untethered jailbreak for all A4 devices so it’s better to wait.

What TinyCFW is:

• It will modify an existing ipsw for an ipad2 gsm/cdma or iphone4 gsm/cdma
• It WILL modify the ipsw TO UPDATE YOUR BASEBAND TO THE LATEST!
• It will create an ipsw that you can use with TinyUmbrella AND iTunes to restore to a version of iOS that you have SHSHs for.
• It is primarily for iPad2 with a baseband OR iPhone 4.

What TinyCFW is NOT:

• A jailbreak
• An unlock
• A tool to protect your baseband.
• A tool that will restore your device to any firmware
• A tool for use with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPad, or iPhone 4S

Steps To Downgrade iPad 2 / iPhone 4 On iOS 5.0.1 To iOS 4.3.3

STEP 1: Download the required files below:

• Download iOS 4.3.3 for iPad 2 or iPhone 4 from here.
• Download TinyUmbrella (Windows / Mac)
• Download TinyCFW (Windows - Jar)
• Download iTunes from here.

STEP 2: Now start TinyCFW (note: you must have java installed and at least 2.5 GB of RAM). Once it opens, hit the top button and choose iOS 4.3.3 IPSW.

STEP 3: Now click on the second button so that TinyCFW will tell you the firmware and baseband versions.

STEP 4: Click on ‘Save Target IPSW’ then wait two minutes and you’ll get a file named:

<your original ipsw name>.bbupdate.ipsw

STEP 5: Now open Tinyumbrella and make iTunes look at Cydia’s Server from the “Advanced” options.

STEP 6: Plug your iPad 2, switch it off, and put it in DFU mode.

STEP 7: Finally open iTunes and select the custom firmware you created above to restore your iPad 2.

Once restored, you’llget your iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.3. You can then head to JailbreakMe.com and start jailbreaking your device

Apple TV 2 4.43 untethered done also. Will be able to test in some days, thanks to @firecore that’d ship me an Apple TV 2 for testing !

Since the code has been completed for the above mentioned devices we can safely assume that Pod2G would now work on releasing his untethered jailbreak technique. However, we still have to hear whether the untethered would work for iPhone 4S and iPad 2, because Pod2G has not made any announcement about these two devices.

But I guess we would have to wait and see when this jailbreak technique is released and what additional devices it will support.

What is Cydia?

Cydia is a third-party, independent installer application for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Cydia is developed by Jay Freeman (Saurik) and it’s actually much similar to Apple’s app store. Cydia allows you to download tons of tweaks & utilities that you’ll need to make the best out of your iOS device. Cydia brings you many applications that can be downloaded either for free or for a small amount of money.

What is the difference between app store and Cydia?

That’s a good question. You’ve now known that Cydia is much similar to the app store but you may want to know what’s the difference. Well, some apps that can’t be approved by Apple. Those apps are really very important for your iPhone. Utilities and tweaks can be found over Cydia are those that are not there on the app store.

Cydia offers you over 400,000+ apps and they’re all useful. In the next questions, we’ll show you what kind of apps does Cydia offers and why you will need them.

Why Cydia?

Because Cydia offers you what Apple doesn’t. For example, Apple doesn’t give you the ability to change themes of your iPhone. Every smartphone owner would always like to change his mobile theme. On Cydia, you can install a tweak called “Winterboard” which allows you to download and install themes on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

How can I get Cydia?

That’s a complicated thing for some. To get Cydia, you’ll need to jailbreak. You may don’t know what’s jailbreaking, so let’s head over the next question.

What’s jailbreaking?

In brief, jailbreaking means installing Cydia. That’s a kind of complicated process but it has been confirmed that iOS jailbreaking is 100% legal by the U.S. government. Though, Apple still fights jailbreaking.

The war between Apple and jailbreaking has been there since 2008 when the first jailbreak tool was released by the genius iPhone hacker George Hotz, better known as Geohot.

There’s actually two kinds of jailbreaks, one of them is a bootrom jailbreak which lasts for ever. That jailbreak like Geohot’s latest Limera1n jailbreak. Limera1n’s exploit is still being used up till now on all iOS devices except the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S (which are recently released after the release of Limera1n).

The second kind is the userland jailbreak. This jailbreak is only made for the current iOS software. In other words, it can be patched by Apple in future iOS software updates. This one like JailbreakMe 3.0 for iPad 2 which has been patched only after 10 days.

What is tethered, untethered and semi tethered jailbreak?

As previously posted, tethered jailbreak is that jailbreak where you’ll need to plug in your iPhone into your computer every time the device reboots. Untethered kills that problem and allows you to reboot without any issues. Semi tethered closes the gap between the previous ones, it allows you to reboot without any problems but you won’t get control over some apps (especially those downloaded jailbreak apps). However you can get full access again once you connect it to your computer. You can read more here.

Can I download Cydia without jailbreak?

Absolutely NO! Never believe anyone telling you that you can download Cydia without jailbreak.

How to jailbreak?

So you decided to install Cydia? You’ll need to jailbreak. In order to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you’ll need to know the current iOS you’re using. For iOS 5 users, you can get tethered jailbreak from here, semi-tethered jailbreak from here and better wait for the untethered one. Is Cydia safe?

Cydia is not 100% safe since almost every jailbreak app is approved on Cydia. This increases the chance of malicious apps getting through too. You should only download apps & tweaks from trusted repositories. Repositories like ModMyi and BigBoss are the safest ones. Oh, you don’t know what’s repositories?

What’s repositories?

Repository is the online hub in which developers store their tweaks for quick and easy access and installation. There are a lot of repositories as ModMyi repo and BigBoss repo where we can find out most of tweaks we search for.

Cydia structure

In case you have already got Cydia, you’ll need to know what’s inside it. Once you open Cydia, you’ll find 5 tabs, here’s everything you need to know:

Home – You can find here some applications sponsored, more Sources FAQ, account information and some important settings.

Sections – In this tab, you can see all apps divided into categories. You should just go in the category you need and look up for your tweak.

Changes – All updates and newly added programs can be found here. This tab is updated every time you open Cydia.

Manage – Allows you t omanage Cydia, remove programs, add sources and repositories and have access to all storage.

Search – That’s the tab where you can search for a tweak – only if you got the name.

How do I pay for apps on Cydia?

In Apple’s app store, you can pay through your iTunes Apple ID. On Cydia, you can login with a Facebook or Twitter account and pay using Paypal or Amazon gift cards. Payments on Cydia are easier than you expect.
